7 Best Fall Day Trips from Tampa, Florida (2026)

Fall in Florida looks a little different.

We may not have mountains covered in red and orange leaves, and there's a pretty good chance you'll still be wearing shorts in October, but fall is actually one of our favorite times to explore beyond Tampa Bay.

The temperatures eventually start becoming a little more comfortable. Fall festivals fill the calendar. Outdoor dining sounds appealing again. And places that might feel a little too hot to explore in July suddenly make for a great Saturday adventure.

The best part?

You don't need to book a hotel or plan an entire vacation.

From historic small towns and natural springs to gardens, antique shopping, wildlife, and Old Florida charm, here are 7 of the best fall day trips from Tampa in 2026.

1. Mount Dora

🚗 From Tampa: About 1 hour 45 minutes–2 hours
Best For: Small-town fall vibes, shopping & date days

If you're looking for somewhere that actually gives you a little bit of that classic fall small-town feeling, Mount Dora is probably our first pick.

Located northwest of Orlando, Mount Dora feels completely different from Tampa.

You'll find a walkable downtown filled with local restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, antique stores, historic buildings, and views of Lake Dora.

It's the kind of place where you don't necessarily need an itinerary.

Park downtown, grab coffee, walk through the shops, have lunch somewhere local, and see where the day takes you.

If you're visiting on the weekend and love antiques, add Renninger's Flea Market & Antique Center to the trip. The sprawling market combines antiques, vintage finds, a flea and farmers market, and tons of vendors.

Why Go in the Fall?

Mount Dora's event calendar really starts getting good during fall, and the cooler weather makes walking downtown much more enjoyable.

It's also one of those Florida towns where seasonal decorations, festivals, old buildings, and local shops can make it feel a little more like fall, even when it's still 80 degrees outside.

Our Perfect Day: Coffee downtown → explore the shops → lunch → Renninger's → sunset near Lake Dora.

2. Crystal River

🚗 From Tampa: About 1.5 hours
Best For: Nature lovers & outdoor adventures

Want to completely change scenery?

Head north to Crystal River.

This area is famous for its clear springs and manatees, but you don't necessarily have to wait until the middle of winter to visit.

Spend the day kayaking, paddleboarding, exploring the springs, walking around downtown Crystal River, or simply enjoying a part of Florida that feels much quieter than Tampa Bay.

As temperatures begin cooling later in the fall, manatee activity around the area's springs also starts becoming something to watch.

Why Go in the Fall?

Kayaking in Florida is considerably more enjoyable when the temperature isn't hovering around 95 degrees.

Fall also puts you closer to Crystal River's famous winter manatee season.

Make It a Full Day: Book an early morning kayak trip → lunch in Crystal River → explore downtown → stop somewhere along the coast for sunset on the way home.

3. Dade City

🚗 From Tampa: About 45 minutes–1 hour
Best For: An easy fall day trip close to Tampa

You don't actually have to drive very far to get that small-town fall feeling.

Dade City is one of our favorite close-to-home options.

Spend some time exploring downtown, visit local shops, grab lunch, and then add a seasonal attraction or farm to the afternoon.

For a little Florida history, visit Pioneer Florida Museum & Village, an open-air museum featuring historic buildings and exhibits highlighting Florida's pioneer past.

Fall is an especially fun time to watch the museum's calendar because it's home to the annual Scarecrow Festival and other seasonal events.

Why Go in the Fall?

This is where Dade City shines.

The surrounding area is home to farms, pumpkin patches, seasonal festivals, and plenty of fall activities.

You could easily combine downtown Dade City with a pumpkin patch or corn maze and turn it into the closest thing Tampa Bay has to a traditional fall road trip.

Our Perfect Day: Breakfast → downtown Dade City → Pioneer Florida Museum → pumpkin patch/fall festival → dinner.

4. Bok Tower Gardens + Lake Wales

🚗 From Tampa: About 1.5 hours
Best For: A peaceful fall date or family day

If you've never visited Bok Tower Gardens, fall is a great excuse.

The Lake Wales landmark combines landscaped gardens, walking paths, nature, historic architecture, and the iconic Singing Tower.

Instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, this is the kind of place where the entire point is slowing down.

Walk through the gardens.

Find somewhere to sit.

Listen to the carillon.

Explore Pinewood Estate.

Have lunch.

And actually enjoy being outside.

The gardens also host seasonal programming throughout fall. In 2026, the fall calendar begins ramping up in early October with the Rootstock Fall Plant Sale, hayrides, live music, and the new Stories in Stone: Primal outdoor exhibit.

Why Go in the Fall?

Florida's gardening season begins in fall, and the gardens embrace it.

More importantly, exploring acres of gardens becomes considerably more appealing once temperatures begin dropping.

Make It a Full Day: Bok Tower Gardens → lunch → explore Lake Wales → take the scenic route home.

5. Micanopy + Paynes Prairie

🚗 From Tampa: About 2 hours
Best For: The most unique fall road trip

If you're willing to stretch the definition of “day trip” a little, this might be our favorite.

Start in Micanopy, a tiny historic town just south of Gainesville known for its old buildings, massive oak trees, antique stores, and Old Florida atmosphere.

This isn't a place you go because there are 50 attractions.

You go because it feels completely different.

Walk around town, browse the antique stores, grab something to eat, and then head to nearby Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park.

And this is where the trip gets really interesting.

Paynes Prairie is Florida's first state preserve and offers a landscape you probably don't picture when you think of Florida.

The preserve is home to wild-roaming bison and horses, along with alligators, deer, and an incredible variety of birds.

Stop at the visitor center and walk out to the 50-foot observation tower for panoramic views across the prairie. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but that's part of the fun.

Why Go in the Fall?

Cooler temperatures make hiking and wildlife watching much more comfortable, and Micanopy's oak-lined streets feel especially appropriate for a fall road trip.

Our Perfect Day: Leave Tampa early → explore Micanopy → lunch → Paynes Prairie → observation tower → sunset drive home.

6. Anna Maria Island

🚗 From Tampa: About 1–1.5 hours, depending on traffic
Best For: A Florida-style fall day

Not every fall day trip needs pumpkins and corn mazes.

Sometimes you need to embrace the fact that you live in Florida.

Head south to Anna Maria Island and spend the day at the beach once some of the intense summer heat begins backing off.

Walk around Pine Avenue, grab lunch, rent bikes, spend a few hours on the beach, and stay for sunset.

Fall can be an especially nice time to rediscover the Gulf Coast after the peak summer months.

Why Go in the Fall?

The beach doesn't suddenly stop being beautiful when summer ends.

Fall can mean slightly more comfortable temperatures while Gulf water may still be warm enough to enjoy, particularly earlier in the season.

And watching a Gulf sunset in October while friends up north are scraping frost off their windshields?

That's one of those moments when living in Florida makes a lot of sense.

Our Perfect Day: Beach morning → lunch → explore the island → ice cream → sunset.

7. Tarpon Springs + Honeymoon Island

🚗 From Tampa: About 45 minutes–1 hour
Best For: Food + exploring + sunset

Here's another day trip that gives you several experiences in one.

Start in Tarpon Springs at the historic Sponge Docks.

Walk around, explore the shops, learn about the area's Greek heritage and sponge-diving history, and most importantly, come hungry.

This is the day to order Greek food.

After lunch, head south toward Dunedin and Honeymoon Island State Park.

Spend the late afternoon walking the beach or nature trails before staying for sunset.

Why Go in the Fall?

You're combining two activities that become infinitely better once Florida's summer heat starts calming down:

Walking around outside and going to the beach without feeling like you're melting.

Our Perfect Day: Sponge Docks → Greek lunch → dessert → Honeymoon Island → sunset.

BONUS: Turn the Drive Into Part of the Trip

One thing we've learned about day trips is that the destination doesn't have to be the entire experience.

Skip the drive-thru on the way there.

Find a local coffee shop.

Stop at a roadside produce stand.

Take the scenic route for part of the drive.

Find a local restaurant instead of a chain.

Stop when you see something interesting.

Some of the best parts of a road trip are the things you didn't plan.

When Does Fall Weather Actually Arrive in Tampa?

This is the question every Tampa resident asks around September.

The calendar says fall.

The weather says absolutely not.

September can still feel very much like summer, with heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms.

October can be a mixed bag too.

But as we move toward late October and November, we usually start getting more of those mornings and evenings that remind us why fall and winter are some of the best times to live in Florida.

If your day trip involves a lot of walking, hiking, or outdoor exploring, we'd aim for an early start regardless of the month.

What to Bring on a Florida Fall Day Trip

Our Florida road-trip checklist looks a little different from the one you'd use up north:

  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Bug spray
  • Light jacket for later in the season
  • Portable phone charger
  • Swimsuit (you never know)
  • Umbrella
  • Snacks for the drive

And yes, even in October and November, bring sunscreen.

The Best Part About Living in Tampa Bay? You Can Go in Almost Any Direction.

This is something that's easy to overlook when you live here.

Within about two hours of Tampa, you can be kayaking through crystal-clear springs, browsing antiques in a historic small town, hiking through a prairie where bison roam, walking through botanical gardens, eating Greek food beside the Sponge Docks, or watching the sunset from a Gulf Coast beach.

And you can still sleep in your own bed that night.

That's one of our favorite things about living in Tampa Bay.
