Fall Day Trip from Tampa: Spend the Day in Mount Dora, Florida

When you live in Florida, a fall day trip looks a little different. We may not have mountains covered in orange and red leaves, but we do have charming small towns, outdoor dining, waterfront views, local shops and plenty of places that feel especially fun to explore once fall arrives.

One of our favorites?

Mount Dora, Florida.

Located northwest of Orlando, Mount Dora makes for a fun getaway when you're ready to trade Tampa Bay for small-town streets and a slower pace for the day.

In our October edition of The EGG Edit, we named Mount Dora our “Worth the Drive” pick and it's easy to see why. Charming streets, local shops, great food and beautiful waterfront views give you everything you need for a Florida fall day trip.

Here’s how we’d spend the day.

Start With a Walk Through Downtown Mount Dora

Part of Mount Dora's appeal is that you don't necessarily need a packed itinerary.

Start your day downtown and explore on foot. Wander the streets, take in the small-town atmosphere and give yourself time to stop whenever something catches your attention.

This isn't a rush from attraction to attraction kind of trip.

Grab a coffee. Walk around. Explore.

That's the point.

Browse the Local Shops

Shopping local is one of the things we specifically highlighted in our Mount Dora EGG Edit feature.

Instead of spending the afternoon inside a giant shopping center, browse the unique shops around downtown and see what you find.

It's also a good opportunity to start checking a few names off your holiday shopping list while supporting Florida small businesses.

Grab Lunch Downtown

By this point, you'll probably be ready for lunch.

Rather than planning every minute of your trip before you leave Tampa, we'd recommend giving yourself time to walk around downtown, look at a few menus and pick somewhere that catches your eye.

If the Florida version of fall weather decides to cooperate, even better, find somewhere you can sit outside and enjoy it.

Head Toward the Waterfront

One of the things that sets Mount Dora apart from many other Florida small towns is the combination of a walkable downtown and waterfront scenery.

After lunch, slow things down and head toward the water.

Walk around, enjoy the views, take some photos or simply find somewhere to sit for a while.

It's a nice reminder that a great day trip doesn't always need a huge list of things to accomplish.

Check Out What's Happening Around Town

If you're visiting Mount Dora during the fall, check the local calendar before choosing your date.

Seasonal events were one of the four things we highlighted in our October EGG Edit itinerary alongside shopping, lunch downtown and exploring the waterfront. Planning your visit around a special event can turn an ordinary day trip into a completely different experience.

Or skip the event entirely and enjoy Mount Dora on a quieter weekend.

Both sound pretty good to us.

Make the Drive Part of the Adventure

One of our favorite things about living in the Tampa Bay area is how many completely different places you can experience without necessarily planning an entire vacation.

A day trip gives you the fun of going somewhere new without packing luggage, booking a hotel or taking time off work.

Leave Tampa Bay in the morning, spend the day exploring, grab dinner on the way home and sleep in your own bed.

That's our kind of getaway.

Our Perfect Mount Dora Fall Day

If we were planning a simple itinerary, we'd keep it pretty relaxed:

Morning: Drive to Mount Dora + grab coffee
Late Morning: Explore downtown and browse local shops
Lunch: Pick a restaurant downtown
Afternoon: Walk along the waterfront + explore more of town
Late Afternoon: Check out a seasonal event or grab a treat before heading home

No complicated schedule required.

Is Mount Dora Worth the Drive from Tampa?

If you're looking for a Florida day trip with small-town charm, local shopping, good food and waterfront scenery, Mount Dora deserves a spot on your list.

It's exactly why we chose it as our October Worth the Drive destination in The EGG Edit.

Explore a little further, fall a little more in love. 🍂

And that's really what The EGG Edit is all about, helping you discover more of the communities, local businesses and experiences that make living in Florida special.
